SECURITY, SECURITY, SECURITY!

Edited on August 2, 2017

Security is a concern for everyone. In this ‘digital era’ where information is considered a very valuable asset, arguably more than money itself, it becomes important for one to ensure they remain protected… And as laptops, tablets, smartphones, and Wi-Fi become more prevalent in the office and even at home, so do the risks that both corporate and personal data can be lost or stolen.

Closer home, as we head to the elections, a different kind of security concern looms.
This issue, we have prepared a few tips just for you. We will not only look at information and system security ….but we will also look at a few personal security tips as we gear up for the elections.

Banking Security Do’s

  • Monitor your account status regularly and if you notice any anomalies do not hesitate to call the bank
  • For banking and other sensitive online activities, ensure you log out or sign off the site after completing transactions.
  • Confirm that you have set up account notifications for transactions in your account i.e. sms or email. These alerts will give quick notification of any suspicious activity in your account
  • When performing internet banking transactions, always confirm that you are connected to the genuine bank’s website by checking the digital certificate on the website URL. This can be done by clicking on the padlock that appears on the URL.

Information Security Dos

  • Use robust passwords that include letters, numbers and symbols and are longer than 6 digits at the very least.
  • Lock your computer screen when leaving it unattended.
  • Change your PIN and passwords frequently
  • Ensure that the device that you use to do internet or mobile banking has appropriate and updated security packages installed.
  • Caution must be placed when utilizing wireless hot spots for sensitive transactions such as banking as the average user will not have the capability to detect unsecured networks.
  • Ensure that your anti-virus software has not expired or is out of date.
  • Only use security packages from reputable vendors.
  • If you are using a Microsoft operating system, use their free tools to detect and clean your computer should it already be infected.
  • Know what packages you have on your system so that you can recognize fake messages purporting to be from service providers whose packages you have not installed.

Information Security Don’ts

  • Never follow links to URLs emailed to you. Enter important URLs yourself.
  • Do not open emails or click on links from unknown sources no matter what the subject matter or attachment is named – this is a common method used to lure users to activate malicious code.
  • Do not use public computers like Internet cafes to do internet banking.
  • Do not use obvious information in your passwords like your own name or date of birth or that of family members.
  • Do not share or disclose your username and password to others. Do not write username and password down where others can see it.
  • Do not use the same passwords on social media platforms and for banking. Do not re-cycle passwords.
  • Avoid sharing personal information on Social Media

Personal Security tips this election period

  • Stay alert. Know what is happening around you either by watching the news, reading the newspapers etc.
  • Don’t spread hate speech or engage in social Media Wars
  • Respect other people’s opinions.
  • Keep a list of important emergency numbers nearby
  • Ensure you stock up on food and any other important necessities just in case you are not able to leave the house

Being vigilant, whether online or offline, is everyone’s job. You are your own responsibility. Therefore Be Safe and Stay Alert!
